DEPARTMENT OF CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AND WATER UTILIZATION
The Department of Catchment Management and Water Utilization is a technical department in the Commission with 3 divisions. The divisions are:
- Water Use Efficiency
- Public Water Services, Tariff and Charges
- Catchment Management Planning
The Department is charged with the responsibility of coordinating the activities of the 8 Catchment Management Offices located in the 8 hydrological areas which are as follows:
- Western Littoral Catchment Management office Oshogbo, Osun State.
- Niger Central Catchment Management Office, Minna, Niger State.
- Eastern Littoral Catchment Management Office, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
- Niger South Catchment Management office, Asaba, Delta State.
- Lower Benue Catchment management Office, Lafia, Nasarawa State.
- Upper Benue Catchment Management Office, Gombe, Gombe State.
- Lake Chad Catchment Management Office, Dutse, Jigawa State.
- Niger North Catchment Management Office, Gusau, Zamfara State.
FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department has the following functions as shown below:
- Preparation of Water Efficiency Strategies;
- Prioritize water use to ensure water balance even in drought situation.
- Access water availability and demands;
- Promote strategies on provision of safe water for all Nigerians;
- Detailed knowledge of existing abstraction and storage;
- Explore possible changes in abstraction and storage regimes that may mitigate ill effects of past developments.
- Apply priorities set down by government to encourage desired development;
- Monitor impact on the water resources of the Basins;
- Produce Catchment Management Plans for water management and
- Implement a time bound action plan to meet the standards set jointly with Federal Ministry of Environment (FME) for the Basins.
- Development of water allocation plan for the purpose of collaborating with the Department of Allocation and Authorization in water allocation to prospective licencees.
- Undertakes the installation of water metering equipment at the point of abstraction.
