As a regulator in the sector, the Commission has continued to process applications for water right licenses to prospective service providers. Water Use Regulation has been vetted by the Federal Ministry of Justice and gazetted in February, 2016 and amended in 2020.

The purposes of water use License are:
1. To ensure sustainability, efficient utilization, equitable & beneficial use of water
2. To coordinate the multiple water uses in a river basin
3. To maintain the order of water use
4. To minimize conflicts of competing users
