The Federal Government has called for the collaboration of the national stakeholders by exploring sustainable financing and innovative funding models to support water resources development.

The Acting Executive Director, Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Mrs. Sakinatu Suleiman Abbo Jimeta made the call while declaring open the workshop on the National Stakeholder’s Consultation Workshop in Integrated Water Resources Management in Nigeria with the theme: ‘Budgeting and Financing for Water Resources Development and Management’ in Abuja.

The Acting Executive Director said the nation’s development on budgeting and financing for water resources development and management is critical.

“As we all know, water is life and effective management of this precious resource is essential for our economic growth, social well-being, and environmental sustainability. Our theme reflects the urgency and importance of securing adequate funding to develop and manage Nigeria’s water resources and essential infrastructure for the sector”.

Our nation’s economic, social, environmental, and health costs are significantly impacted by inadequate water management. It is time for us to come together and create a comprehensive framework for sustainable water resources development”.

“Our desire and expectations at the end of this workshop amongst others include, effective Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) practices by ensuring stakeholders work together to protect and conserve our water resources; sustainable financing especially by exploring innovative funding models to support water resources development; and robust community engagement by empowering local communities to manage and maintain water infrastructure in their locality”, she added.

The Director Corporate Support Services, Mr. Sunday Idowu while delivering his welcome address, said “the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) is committed to regulating and managing the national water resources.”

“We recognize that this task requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, including government Agencies, private sector organizations, and local communities,” he said.
