Engr. Magashi Umar Bashir was born in Kano, Kano State of Nigeria on the 14th February 1963 into the Waziri Royal Dynasty.
His ancestor hails from Magashi Quarters in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State. He holds Masters and B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Mining Engineering & Exploration Geology, from the Technical University Kosice, Slovak Republic; He attended the College of Arts and Sciences, Kano for his IJMB and his Secondary School Education at the Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State, Nigeria.
A seasoned Hydrologist/ Hydrogeologist, Engr. Magashi on his return to Nigeria after his studies abroad, carried out his National Youth Service Primary Assignment with the Sylvens Quarries Nigeria Limited, Akure, Ondo State in 1993. Subsequently he commenced his working career with the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources as a Geologist in the year 1994. He rose to the rank of a Principal Geologist by the time he was transferring to the Federal Civil Service at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in 1999. Between 2006 and 2009, he was assigned to work as a Counterpart Staff on the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (WSSSRP).
An astute Professional and administrator, his career in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources started as a Principal Hydrogeologist on Grade Level 12 and was drafted as one of the pioneer Staff to the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in the year 2009. At NIHSA, he served, in succession, as the Special Assistant to three Director Generals and rose to become a Director before he retired. Along the line, he served as the Acting Director, Hydrogeo-informatics Department; the Director, Department of Operational Hydrology and Director, Hydrogeology.
During his working career in NIHSA, he distinguished himself as a reputable negotiator by initiating and negotiating a number of bi-lateral cooperation with some International Organisations such as World Bank, United Nations, JICA, NEWMAP, among others.
He also successfully attended several National and International conferences and workshops, these amongst others includes an Intensive training for Civil Servants (SAMFORT); Operation and Maintenance Training for NEWMAP Hydro-Met and Automated Flood Early Warning Equipment in collaboration with NIHSA, Nigeria; at Sutron Cooperation Virginia, USA; First Joint Arab and African International Hydrology Program (IHP) & Man and Biosphere (MAB) meeting towards COP22 and SDG’s 2030; held at Tangiers, Morocco; and International Hydrology Program (IHP) International Council Meeting, Paris, France.
It is in recognition of this and past laudable achievements that he was in December, 2019, appointed The Executive Director/ CEO of the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
He is a devout Muslim, Quaranic Scholar and Board Member of many Islamic and other Charitable Organisations. Engr. Magashi has turned out many publications, these includes:
- Delta Sediments of the KL’COV Layers in the South Eastern Slovakian Depression and their Oil Prospectiveness
- Conducted more than 35,000 Geophysical Surveys in the Basement Complex, the Sedimentary and the Chad Basin
Engr. Magashi is a holder of several awards and recognitions; which includes the Ministerial Commendation Award for the successful hosting of the International Conference on Lake Chad. He is also a fellow and member of many Professional Bodies; chiefly among them are Fellow of the National Association of Hydrogeologists of Nigeria (FNAH), Member Nigerian Minning and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Member Council for Nigeria Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) and Member International Water Association (MIWA). He is married and blessed with Children and Grand Children. His hobbies include playing Volley Ball, Exercising and Reading.
